Ride Safe, Ride Smart: International Snowmobile Safety Week Returns January 10–18

Int'l Snowmobile Safety Week 2026

[Barrie, ON - January 9, 2026] - As winter weather continues to shape trail conditions across Ontario, snowmobile clubs, safety partners and law enforcement are proud to join together to observe the annual ISMA International Snowmobile Safety Week, taking place January 10-18, 2026. This long-standing campaign unites snowmobile enthusiasts and safety advocates across North America in a shared focus on smart choices and responsible riding.

In partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is reminding riders that changing weather can directly affect trail status - and that it is important to get the latest information on the Interactive Trail Guide (ITG) and the Go Snowmobiling Ontario App to confirm whether trails are available (Green), limited availability (Yellow), or unavailable (Red) before planning your ride.

“Snowmobile safety isn’t just a one-week conversation - it’s something riders should think about all season,” said Ryan Eickmeier, CEO of the OFSC. “For more than 30 years, this week has reinforced the importance of responsible riding which starts with checking the Interactive Trail Guide, riding only on available trails, and making responsible decisions every time you head out.”

With weather patterns continuing to shift, trail availability may vary widely across the province in the days ahead. While the longer-range forecast remains encouraging in many areas, short-term temperature changes can still impact the trail status. Snowmobilers are reminded that conditions can change quickly, making it especially important to plan each ride carefully and using the ITG before heading out. Snowmobile club volunteers will continue working with whatever conditions winter delivers, adjusting as needed to safely make trails available when possible.

This year’s safety week highlights several key reminders for all riders:

  • Know Before You Go: Always check current trail status and weather conditions before leaving home.
  • Ride Within Your Ability: Use care, caution and control at all times.
  • Respect Trail Status: Only ride on trails that are marked as available or limited available - do not ride trails listed as unavailable.
  • Make Responsible Choices: Wear appropriate safety gear, avoid alcohol or drugs while riding, and carry emergency equipment.
  • Plan Ahead: Tell someone about your route and expected return time, and ride with others whenever possible.

Throughout International Snowmobile Safety Week and the remainder of the winter season, the OFSC and OPP will continue promoting safe, responsible riding across Ontario’s trail system. Snowmobilers are reminded that safety is a shared responsibility - one that protects not only those on the trail, but also the volunteers, landowners and communities that make snowmobiling possible.

Before every ride, take a moment to know before you go, plan within your abilities, and make choices that help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and successful snowmobiling season.
